Gender sensitive e-car sharing

Carsharing is an important component of sustainable mobility. The user group is still rather homogeneous and male-dominated and the system is primarily geared towards their needs.

The GECAR – Gender-sensitive e-car sharing – project therefore aimed to determine gender-specific application and (non-)use behavior, user experiences and barriers to use of various e-car sharing services in Austria. In the spirit of co-creation, women’s user groups were set up to test the service in Vienna (MO.Point) and Bregenz (Verein Maronihof) and make suggestions for improvement, which were implemented by the car sharing providers involved. Furthermore, recommendations were formulated that address the providers. However, these recommendations reach their limits, as the availability and locations of car sharing – which was seen as very important by the support group – are part of political decisions.
